(dalbergia cearensis) is an exotic wood species primarily from Brazil and other parts of South America and Mexico. Kingwood is sometimes referred to as violet wood, violetta or violette and is considered to be a true rosewood. It has a mixture of colors predominantly violet with streaks of black, brown, and yellow radiating throughout the grain. This exotic timber is very strong and hard which can be tough on both hand and power tools. Keeping your cutting edges sharp when working Kingwood is essential to producing a finer machined finish. This can be further refined to produce an excellent natural polish. Kingwood is a beautiful exotic hardwood

that has been used extensively throughout history in France and England for fine furniture and architectural applications. Present day uses are more restricted due to the availability of the logs. Typical sizes of the lumber are 3” to 8” wide and 3’ to 6’ in length and as such are used for smaller projects like marquetry, inlays, wood turnings, jewelry boxes, finger boards and other fancy wares. Teak (Tectona grandis) is an exotic wood species native to Burma, India and South East Asia. The Burmese teak is commonly referred to as genuine teak due to the introduction of many so called teak substitutes to the marketplace. Burmese and Indian teaks are the real deal and can be recognized by their consistent golden-brown color, coarse surface, and oily consistency. Teak is a hard wood that offers considerable resistance to cutting tools where only tungsten carbide tipped tooling will do. The natural oils in this lumber can also present issues when gluing, therefore it is suggested to glue up the materials promptly after preparation before the oils rise up to the surface. Teak stains and finishes very well especially when using oil finishes such as Tung oil or teak oil, although most often it is finished clear without staining. Teak is a very durable wood and as such, it is used extensively for boat and ship building, marine decks, rails and cabin trim. It is also very popular for fine furniture making, cabinet making, wood turning, flooring, and veneers. Teak is also known to be resistant to acid and fire and can be found in laboratories for counter tops, vats and containers. Bolivian Rosewood (machaerium scleroxylon) is known by a variety of other names such as morado, pau ferro, jacaranda pardo, and caviuna. This exotic hardwood grows primarily in Bolivia, southern Brazil and tropical South America. Some characteristics of this timber include its hardness, although it is very dense it does tend to work easily with hand tools and better with machine power tools. Finishing is also straightforward as Bolivian rosewood takes a beautiful natural polish with oils and lacquers. The color of this lumber is usually purplish tan with streaks of brown and black figure running throughout the grain. The wood also has a scent that alludes when cutting that is much like that of American Black walnut. Some uses of Bolivian rosewood include finger boards for musical instruments, wood turning, wood carving, fine furniture making, flooring and intarsia. Some figured logs are also used to produce architectural veneers. Orange Heart (caesalpinia platyloba) also known as Chakte Viga or Paela comes mostly from Central America and Mexico. It is a hardwood best known for its beautiful orange color and subtle grain pattern which is typically straight and interlocking.
